Maintaining the perimeter and coordinating with responders keeps people safe and lets the hazmat response happen smoothly. A security officer’s job at a hazmat incident is to create and control access to the affected area, ensuring that only authorized personnel and emergency responders enter. By standing at entry points, the officer helps prevent contamination from spreading, keeps bystanders away, and tracks who is inside the secured zone. At the same time, the security officer communicates with incident command and the response teams, relaying information, status updates, and any concerns about safety or access. This role supports the incident by enabling responders to work efficiently while maintaining a safe, organized environment.

Leading the incident response is outside the security officer’s primary function; that leadership rests with the incident commander and trained responders. Direct containment of the hazardous material is carried out by hazmat specialists who have the appropriate equipment and procedures. Evacuating everyone immediately without reporting disrupts the command structure and can put people at greater risk; evacuations, when needed, are ordered and coordinated through the incident command system.
